Artist: Maylea Saito

12 x 12 Screen print on newsprint

Narrative:  I illustrated and printed this piece around the time I was deepening my relationship with my hometown after moving back to San Jose from New York City. This illustration is based off my personal memories growing up as a 2.5 generation mixed Asian American in San Jose CA. Many of my fondest experiences of my youth revolve around food - nostalgia of hearing Cantonese being spoken alongside the rapidity of chopped vegetables, picking up fresh tofu in Japantown, learning more about my mixed identity and my hometown through the aisles of Marina Food and Santo Market. This piece is a homage to my childhood in San Jose, and to anyone else who feels a comforting joy when walking through the grocery store with ingredients from your childhood and culture
